Stoma surgery is a big change for anyone. One thing to remember is, you are not alone. There are many support groups that may help you come to terms with the changes, your stoma care specialist team will be able to advise you of what is available in your area.
You will be able to return to normal activities and lifestyle once you have recovered from the initial surgery. Your stoma will not stop you doing anything you have done before.

You may experience some changes in how you feel about your body. This is perfectly normal. Be kind to your self this is life changing and often lifesaving surgery. Keep talking; your partner or close friends will always lend an understanding ear. Your stoma care nurse is also always there to help support you with the adjustments as you get used to your new life with a stoma.
Clothing
You may worry about clothing after surgery. There is nothing to worry about, you can wear the styles you always have; yes, that does include fitted clothing. The only thing you need to be aware of is your waist band, you do not want that to sit directly on your stoma. If your surgery was an emergency and siting was not available prior to your operation this maybe require a slight adjustment.
Exercise

A few weeks post-surgery you can begin light exercise building up as your recovery completes. Your stoma will not stop you being as physically active as you were before surgery. In many cases the surgery can give you a new lease of life and you may find you want to be more active once you are feeling better.
The main piece of advice here is to always consult your stoma care nurse or consultant as it is essential that you are well recovered before starting any exercise regime.
If anything you do feels uncomfortable, stop!
Always wear comfortable clothing.
Remember even light exercise is great for your body and mind.
Diet

Your stoma care specialist nurse will advise you if there is anything to avoid regarding your digestion. You may notice changes in your output depending on what you eat. Try to avoid too many fizzy drinks or foods that make you flatulent. This may result in your pouch ballooning (blowing up). Always remember that digestion begins as soon you put food in your mouth so extra chewing is always helpful.
If your output is particularly liquid (with the exception on Urostomy) some of the following may help:
- Jelly Babies
- Marshmallows
- Wine Gums
- Porridge
Drink plenty of fluids 1500ml–2000ml per day is recommended.
Remember that your stoma is part of making you better, it does not define who you are.
